“All truly great thoughts are conceived while walking.” ― Friedrich Nietzsche

“It’s super-cold!!” The squealing woman said as she quickly shuffled past me, putting distance between herself and her companion. Her jacket was blowing wildly and her fur-lined hood appeared to be repeatedly frightened as the fur abruptly went from relaxed to standing on end in quick succession.

I had seen the pair before in Canal Park, back in Duluth. Well, I heard her first. She put on the same show as the winds whipped around the harbor. To be fair, she had all the right to be shocked by the cold – when they left the parking lot, I noticed they had out of state license plates. If you don’t know what to expect, it’s extra cold.

“It’s typical.” I said smiling, though my face was behind a gator, and my eyes were watering as if I’d just witnessed the saddest scene possible.

Now that I think about it, there is no way I, also, looked anything other than miserable. Perhaps, her call-out was to alert me of the danger I was in. The only thing that could have indicated I was there by choice was the camera in my hands.

The choice before me was if I should head out onto the pier and toward the light house. The iced-over surface reflected the sky like glass. Adorned with ice cleats, I stood and stared at the narrow passage covered in blowing snow.

Nope. My risk budget had been used up.

This would be the only Golden Hour light I would see that day. I did go back to Brighton Beach to photograph ice shards, but the sun had been swallowed by clouds by the time I arrived. Also, after a couple of hours in the cold, it’s hard to warm back up, and I wasn’t really feeling like finding the edge of hypothermia.
